Fraction Art - Mrs. Vasconi's 3rd Grade Class

Dear Sycamore Valley Families:

I hope you and your family are well.  This week has been busy with Spring Conferences and short days.  Additionally, teachers have been busy planning the next WIN cycle.  Grades 3rd through 5th will be using this time to do test preparation as students will be taking the state test starting the week of April 21st through the week of May 8th.  This is a very important time for our students. We ask that students are here each day and that appointments are avoided if at all possible.  Teachers will be sharing additional information specific to their class. Thank you in advance for helping to set our Sharks up for success!

Last night I attended the Classified Employee of the Year celebration.  Jim Gates - our vocal music Instructional Assistant - was recognized as the Sycamore Valley Classified Employee of the Year. Congratulation to Mr. Gates!

District Updates:

Board Resolutions -

School Library Month

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of April as School Library Month. The school library ensures that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information and contributes to the growth and development of all students. Lifelong learning is enhanced and systematically developed through the school library. The librarian’s role is to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library is an integral part of each school’s instructional program.

Arab American Heritage Month

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the month of April as Arab American Heritage Month. Arab Americans have made valuable contributions to virtually every aspect of our national and local community, including medicine, law, business, technology, government, and culture. Issues affecting Arab Americans, such as civil rights abuses, harmful stereotyping, harassment, and bullying must be combated through education and awareness. As stated in the Multicultural Education Policy of the California State Board of Education, each student needs an opportunity to understand the common humanity underlying all people.

National Day of Silence: April 11, 2025 (Rescheduled to April 18, 2025)

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes April 11, 2025 as National Day of Silence. Due to Spring Break, the Day of Silence has been rescheduled to April 18, 2025. During this student-led national event, some students may choose to take a vow of silence to bring attention to the name calling, bullying and harassment that many LGBTQ+  youth face. SRVUSD promotes respect, tolerance and acceptance on all our campuses and believes that all students and staff have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. National Day of Silence will not alter instruction on April 18, but students may voluntarily participate and teachers may discuss and are asked to be thoughtful and sensitive as they create lesson plans. Teachers will be teaching on this day.

Public School Volunteer Appreciation Week:  April 20-26

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the week of April 20-26, 2025 as Public School Volunteer Appreciation Week. The many devoted and dedicated volunteers in our community provide essential support to our students through generous donations of time, talent, and resources. Volunteers enrich learning experiences beyond what is often available for students and selflessly serve on our boards and committees. They play a key role as our partners in education and in fostering a sense of community and pride within our schools and district.

Environmental Week: April 20-26

San Ramon Valley Unified School District recognizes the week of April 20-26, 2025 as Environmental Week. Schools have the potential to effect positive, tangible environmental change while preparing students, in their careers and civic life, to be stewards of their communities, the earth, and its resources. We support students in becoming aware of the impact of their actions on themselves, others, the environment, and vulnerable communities around the world. SRVUSD also acknowledges April 21 as John Muir Day and April 22 as Earth Day.

Ethnic Studies Curriculum- Community Preview and Feedback Opportunity

Ethnic Studies Curriculum - Community Preview and Feedback Opportunity

Proposed curriculum and resources for the new Ethnic Studies course were brought before the Board for preview at the March 18, 2025, meeting. Adoption of instructional materials for the course, which will become a graduation requirement for incoming 9th grade students next school year, is planned for the April 22, 2025, Board meeting.

We invite our community to review the proposed curriculum and provide feedback to the Educational Services team. Your feedback will help strengthen the course and ensure that it is meaningful, inclusive, and impactful for all students. The materials are also available for in-person viewing at the District Office, Building C, from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday until April 21st. For more information on the new Ethnic Studies graduation requirement, see the Ethnic Studies page of the district website or refer to the letter sent to all families on March 20th.

Please keep reading for some upcoming event information, important dates and other PTA/Shark Fund News.

Thank you,

Patricia Kawahara

Principal

2025-2026 Student Class Placement form

After spring break, teachers will meet with Principal Kawahara to begin building balanced classes for the 25/26 school year. Parents and students will be notified of teacher and classroom placement on August 12th, 2025. Careful consideration is given to the class placement of each student. The primary factors considered in class placement are:
1. Current year’s teacher assessment of the student’s needs.
2. Input from support staff - resource, speech, school psychologist, reading specialists.
3. Class balance: academic performance, test scores, behavior, and boy/girl ratio.
4. Physical, medical, emotional and social development of the child.
5. Parent information regarding student’s specific needs.

This form is not required, however if you believe your child has specific needs and/or excels in a particular type of classroom environment that the staff should consider when placing him/her, you are welcome to complete and return the attached form.
