Parent Update Monday, February 10, 2025 |
Dear SD 308 Community, Welcome to February! The first week of this new month has been filled with excitement as we near an important moment in our schools and district as a whole.
At the January 27 Board of Education meeting, we heard from staff members as they shared findings from our recent questionnaires, polls, focus group discussions, and town hall sessions. I was thrilled to see all the data that reflected the thoughts of our students, staff, families, alumni, business leaders, and community members. All zip codes that serve our district, all school buildings, and all grades were represented. Our "Quick Questions" received 2,850 responses. 917 of those came from students! Additionally, our Community Conversation feedback featured 426 unique responses. This insight, coupled with 5Essentials survey data and student performance metrics, helped to formulate the work of our strategic plan.
Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback during this process. We are humbled to hear your voice and grateful for your time, effort, and dedication to supporting the continual growth of Oswego Community Unit School District 308.
We look forward to presenting our dynamic Strategic Plan to the Board of Education at the February 24 meeting. I am especially excited for the Board and the rest of our community to see the launch of SD 308's new video, "Our Story." This video is such a beautiful portrayal of our district, featuring the schools, programs, and faces that make SD 308 so special. I invite you to join us in person or tune in virtually to this Board meeting so you can immerse yourself in the wonderful things happening in our academic community.
Take care, |

| Makerspaces Making Waves at Long Beach |
When introduced to staff, students, and families in Oswego Community Unit School District 308 this past summer, Makerspaces were novel opportunities for students to engage in various STEAM activities.
Now, months later, elementary and junior high school students’ creativity continues to amaze staff and families alike during Makerspace club sessions and beyond.
Kristen Olson, a speech and language pathologist at Long Beach Elementary School, has recently started utilizing Makerspace supplies during her time with students throughout the school day. “I teach the skills through doing, and that’s exactly where STEAM comes into play,” Ms. Olson said.

AVID Transforms through Tutorology |
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) empowers Oswego Community Unit School District 308 students to take control of their learning, teaching skills that translate to life beyond the classroom.
The AVID tutorial process, sometimes referred to as “tutorology,” teaches students how to work step by step through a problem, regardless of the subject in school.
“Your ability to work through your own understanding, it totally changes the way that you present yourself with an obstacle,” said Drew Mundsinger, Oswego High School Learning Center Department Chair and AVID Secondary Director in SD 308.

Attention Parents of Incoming Kindergarten Students! |
Registration is now open for kindergarten students who are new to Oswego Community Unit School District 308. Children will need to be 5 years of age by September 1, 2025 to register for kindergarten for the 2025-26 school year. Students who are currently enrolled in preschool at Brokaw Early Learning Center, Lakewood Creek Elementary School, Long Beach Elementary School, or Wolf’s Crossing Elementary School are considered “Returning Students” and therefore do not need to register for kindergarten at this time.
Incoming kindergarten students and their families are invited to join us for the Kinder-Quest Fair on March 11. This is a great opportunity to meet principals and district departments, get help with registration, turn in medical forms, explore the inside of a bus, and so much more! |
