December 6, 2024 Greetings Tigers Community,
Cold December weather is upon us, but at Thompson Junior High our students and staff are already feeling the warmth of the holiday season! Thompson’s NJHS adopted a family to support with holiday gifts through Oswego Community Cares, and shopped at Wal-Mart to help fill their wish lists! Mrs. Pethoud has been collecting donations for Toys for Tots - we are still accepting donations through the end of the day on Monday December 9. This week, Student Council surprised our students by placing “golden tickets” under two chairs in each classroom, and students who found the tickets turned them in for a special prize. Next week the Thompson bands will delight audiences with their holiday concert - lots of great things going on at Thompson! Lastly, next Friday our Home & School Organization is hosting Frost Fest. They need a number of parent volunteers to help make it a success, please sign up here if you can help: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0449AAA92DA4FB6-53621869-frosty.
Have a great weekend! Thompson Administration Mr. Marcus L. Lewis, Ed.S., Principal Mrs. Karen O’Connor, Asst. Principal
Dr. LaTonya Davis, Asst. Principal Mrs. Theresa Anderson, Asst. Principal SpEd |

** How can my child best protect their belongings? Parents/guardians - we encourage you to have conversations with your student about bringing ONLY the items that are required/needed during school. Avoid carrying excessive amounts of money, items of sentimental or monetary value (including electronics like AirPods) to ensure it is not lost or damaged while at school. If students need to buy a lunch, you can simply load money in their e-wallet through PushCoin. Additionally, please have your student label their belongings (i.e. Chromebook charger, backpacks, water bottles, coats, etc..), so it is easier to return to students.
** No outside restaurant food or deliveries are allowed for students.** Attendance Reminder!
If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please call the attendance line at 630-636-2601 in a timely manner. Please leave the following details in your message: Your name Your student's name Phone number you can be reached with any questions Reason for absence (including any symptoms, if out for illness).
Automated Attendance & Tardy Messages
Everyday automated attendance calls are sent out by the district at 9:30 AM, based on the attendance we have entered into the system by 9:15 AM. Additionally, automated tardy messages are sent out by the district to parents at 3:30 PM daily. If your student is marked tardy it means they were late to a class. You can check tardies and absences in PowerSchool. Please discuss with your student or their teacher for more information. |

| Thompson Student Council
Please save your pop tabs (at home, at work, at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s!!!). Student Council will be collecting these in February as part of a community service project and friendly competition!
We will be selling Wintergrams Dec. 13-19. For $1, students can send a message and a sweet treat to a friend. Please support our fundraiser by giving your child a few extra dollars this week! :)
We need your help! Student Council has big plans for fundraisers and student surprises. We won’t be able to carry through with these plans unless we receive more help from Thompson families. Please consider donating items from our Amazon Wishlist. Student birthdays are shared on the morning announcements (using legal first name and last initial). If you have questions or concerns, please contact kspringsteen@sd308.org. |

Coping with Stress
Stress is a natural feeling, designed to help us cope in challenging situations. In small amounts it can be good, because it pushes individuals to work hard. A Lot of stress or not being able to manage stress, can lead to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. It can also affect academic performance.
There are lots of possible signs of stress such as feeling irritable, anxious, like you cannot enjoy yourself, or worried a lot of the time. Things that can help with stress: -
Work out what it is that's making you feel stressed. For example, is it exams, money or relationship problems? See if you can change your circumstances to ease the pressure you're under.
- Try to have a healthy lifestyle. Eat well, get enough sleep, be physically active, moderate caffeine, and take time to relax as well as working and studying.
- Try not to worry about the future or compare yourself with others.
-
Try to plan your time to help you keep track of your work. Break it down into manageable chunks so you can keep up with deadlines.
- Try talking to a friend, tutor or someone in your family about your stress.
- Try relaxation and breathing exercises. One of my favorites is this GIF: click here.

This is a FREE resource provided to students with items you may not be able to afford. While this is offered to all students, the intent is to share these items with students and families that truly can not purchase them on their own.
Will everyone know that I am using the Care Closet? NO! The use of the Care Closet is confidential! HOW does it work?
Click here to fill out our Google Form with your student's ID#. Your items will be available for pick up in the main office by the following day! No Phone? No problem! Contact your counselor or the main office for a form! |
