Progress Reports Dear Parents/Guardians,
School District 308 has worked to develop curriculum in mathematics, language arts, and other subjects designed to meet the new Illinois Learning Standards. As part of implementingthe standard- aligned curriculum, kindergarten- through f ifth-grade teachers have been monitoring student learning using MasteryConnect. This system allows teachers to monitor student progress and teach skills based on student mastery of the learning standards.
There is a portion of MasteryConnect called the parent portal. In the parent portal, you will be able to view your child’s progress and assessment results related to each learning standard inmathematics, language arts, and other subjects. Access to the parent portal for all elementary parents is available the same as it was during the previous school year. If your email is the same as last year, it will allow you to log into MasteryConnect. If you have not received access to MasteryConnect, your child’s teacher willsoon be linking your email to the parent portal. Attached to this note is more information about the portal and directions for accessing it.MasteryConnect information including videos in both English and Spanish can be found here. Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions or feedback. Thank you in advance for your support! Dr. Tammie Harmon Executive Director of Elementary Education tharmon@sd308.org |

| Student Behavior & Discipline As we can all agree, providing each student the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe and nurturing learning environment in which each student can thrive is of utmost importance. Creating such an environment is no easy task. This task takes committment and effort from many individuals; including students, staff and families. During this time of year many schools, including Boulder Hill, experience an increase in unexpected behavior. This can be for many reasons. There are many ways that we approach behavior and discipline which are preventative; as well as responsive. Here are some of those ways: Systems & Structures - Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) school-wide. Teach & Reinforce behaviors that demonstrate students being Accountable*Respectful*Engaged in all areas of the building.
-
Communicating expectations for learning and instruction using CHAMPS or MAC at the onset of lessons. Explicitly communicating how students will engage in the lesson: Communication, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation & Success; or Movement Activity Communication.
-
Zones of Regulation. Helping students to understand and co-regulate their emotions by identifying the colored zone for their emotions: Green, Yellow, Blue & Red. The goal is for students to utilize strategies that help them to maintain or return to the "Green Zone" which is our "Ready to Learn" zone.
-
SEL instruction using Character Strong. Character Strong is a multi-tiered research based curriculum that supports student safety, behavior and mental health. This is a newly implemented curriculum this year district-wide.
- Trauma Responsive Practices such as: Calmdown areas within each room, building relationships, helping students to be resilient & utilizing de-escalation techniques.
Acknowledging students for demonstrating expected behaviors - Acknowledging students for showing expected Accountable, Respectful & Engaged behaviors through students earning Bobcat Bucks, school-wide postive reinforcement token system.
-
Providing specific verbal praise
- Monthly Bobcat store & drawings- allows students to cash in their earned Bobcat Bucks for desired prizes.
- Student of the Month - individual recognition for students showing exceptional Accountable, Respectful & Engaged behaviors.
- Golden Spatula - classroom recognition for demonstrating expectected behaviors in the classroom.
Responding to unexpected & unsafe behaviors - Discipline Referrals - used to document behaviors that are outlined in the Student Rights & Responsibiities Code of conduct result in disciplinary actions/consequences.
-
Crisis Response team and protocol - Level response to student behavior escalation in safe and supportive ways.
- Parent contact & engagment
How you can help: -
Work positively and collaboratively with school staff teaching and reinforcing these systems, structures and expectatations.
- Review A.R.E. expectations with students. Talk with your student when he/she does not follow these expectations.
- Reach out to classroom teacher and be responsive to teacher request and feedback.
- Communicate with your student that you and your child's teacher and/or other staff are working together to support them
-
Remind your student of the important role that they play in creating and participating in this safe & nurturing environment. This includes following A.R.E.
