A Message from Principal Alain Camou

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Welcome to 2025! Though it has only been two short weeks since our return from Winter Break, Las Lomitas is already buzzing with the harmony of learning, instruction, curiosity, and play. Around every corner and through every classroom door, you can feel the energy and excitement of our vibrant school community. I hope you had a chance to enjoy the break and reflect on the blessings in your lives.

As we celebrate the start of this new year, we are reminded of how much we have to be grateful for, especially in light of the devastating fires in Southern California. Entire communities have been displaced or destroyed, and countless lives have been deeply affected. This is a moment to not only count our blessings but also to come together in support of those in need.

Please continue reading for important updates and information. Together, we are LIONS, and together, we can make a difference!

Ubuntu,

Alain Camou

DEIAB Update

We introduced the character trait of kindness in January. During our Lions' Pride gathering, students reflected on people who have shown kindness to them—at home, at school, and in the community. They also shared ways they practice kindness toward themselves, others, and our school.

This week, we celebrated Korean American Day. Students identified if they were of Korean heritage, and a few of our Korean students shared aspects of their culture with us. They introduced us to their favorite foods, holidays, and even taught us some words and phrases in Korean.

On Monday, January 20, the Las Lomitas community will join the rest of our nation in celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you and your Lion are looking for ways to participate this year, the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center, located in Redwood City, provides a wide variety of experiences between January 15th and 20th. From touring the museum to participating in one of the events, we encourage all who are able to join. Please see the attached image or reach out to the museum for more information.

Celebrating Bobbi Thielemann

After 29 years of dedicated service to the Las Lomitas Computer Lab, Mrs. T has officially retired, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of innovation, learning, and care. Over nearly three decades, she guided generations of students through the ever-evolving world of technology, equipping them with the skills and confidence to thrive in a digital age.

Mrs. T's passion for teaching and her unwavering patience have touched the lives of countless students, staff, and families. Her contributions went far beyond the keyboard and screen; she inspired a love of learning, problem-solving, and creativity that will continue to resonate in our community for years to come.

From the days of the Apple IIe to the era of AI, we thank Mrs. T for her incredible commitment to Las Lomitas. We wish her all the best as she embarks on this well-deserved next chapter—a chapter sure to be filled with joy, adventure, and all the pursuits that bring her happiness.

Among her many passions, including chasing celestial events, Mrs. T is sure to enjoy plenty of quality time with her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will remain an integral part of Las Lomitas.

Parent Homework Survey

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

I hope this message finds you well. I'm writing to inform you about an important update to our school calendar that will affect our community. We understand that calendar changes can impact family schedules, which is why we want to ensure you have this information as soon as possible.

Our calendar will be adjusted in two ways:

  1. Friday, March 14 , which was previously scheduled as a local holiday for Parent-Teacher Conference Week, will now be a minimum school day.
  2. Monday, March 10 which was previously scheduled as a minimum day will now be a full school day.
    1. March 10, 2025 = Full day of instruction
    2. March 11-14, 2025 = Minimum days
  3. The last day of school will be extended by one day, moving from June 5, 2025 to June 6, 2025 which is a minimum day.

As we finalize these calendar adjustments, we are carefully evaluating the date for our 8th grade promotion ceremony. We understand this milestone is significant for our students and families, and we want to ensure we make the best decision for everyone involved. We expect to announce the final promotion date in next week’s district newsletter, giving families ample time to plan for this important celebration.

We recognize these changes may require adjustments to your planned schedules, and we appreciate your flexibility. These adjustments align with our collective bargaining agreement and help us maintain our commitment to both instructional time and our partnership with our educators.

The updated calendar can be found on our district website at https://www.llesd.org/. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's school office.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students' education.

Sincerely,

Dr. Valerie Park

Interim Superintendent

Grades 1-3 Author Visit

Laura G. Lee is a second-generation Korean American children’s book author and illustrator, who is passionate about stories that spark our connection to the world and one another. She lives in northern California with her husband, son, and daughter. When she’s not making books, you may find her in her kitchen adding soy sauce to make tasty food even more delicious, or out on a hunt for authentic Korean-Chinese jajangmyeon (a black bean noodle dish popular in 1960s Seoul).

Use this form to order books that will be signed and personalized by the author and delivered to school for the visit on Jan. 28. To receive a signed, personalized copy, order by end-of-day January 24. Orders placed after the deadline are subject to availability and may not be signed. If you have questions please email Mrs.Davis at cdavis@llesd.org

While this event is geared towards students in Grades 1-3, TK and K families are more that welcome to order books.

Las Lomitas School Site Council

We are looking for engaged and passionate parents to serve on the Las Lomitas School Site Council (SSC)! This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with school staff and provide valuable input on the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), which guides our efforts to ensure the success of every student.

As discussed by School Board President Winikoff at the December 18 School Board Meeting and reported on at the January 15 School Board Meeting by Interim Superintendent Valerie Park, this is your chance to get involved in shaping the future of our school.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Commitment: A two-year term, meeting 3-4 times between January and June in 2025, between November 2025 and June in 2026
  • Role: Monitor progress on the SPSA and work with site staff to ensure we’re meeting our goals.
  • Family/Community Participation: We need  five family/community members for this important role!

If you would like more information or are interested in participating , please contact Principal Camou at acamou@llesd.org.

Anyone interested in running should reach out to Principal Camou by 11:59 am January 31, 2025. Elections will be held in February.

We hope you’ll consider being part of this meaningful way to support our school community!
