Message from Superintendent Veal

Dear Bayshore Community,

I hope this newsletter finds you refreshed after the holiday season. As we return to school and position ourselves to have a fantastic second half of the school year, I want to take this opportunity to remind you of  two critical aspects of your child's educational journey: attendance and reading.

The Power of Consistent School Attendance

Regular school attendance is fundamental to your child's academic and personal growth. Research shows that even a few missed days can have significant long-term impacts:

  • Students who miss 2-4 days in the first month of school are more likely to experience chronic absence throughout the year.
  • Chronic absence can negatively affect reading proficiency and increase the risk of dropping out of high school.

Tips for Ensuring Good Attendance:

  • Build consistent morning and bedtime routines
  • Avoid scheduling vacations and appointments during school days
  • Talk to your child about the importance of being present and responsible for their learning
  • Seek help from us if you’d like our support with helping you get your child to school on time and ready to learn.

The Magic of Reading Together

Reading with your child is a powerful tool for development. Here's why:

  • Builds extensive vocabulary
  • Improves academic performance
  • Develops empathy and imagination
  • Supports cognitive development
  • Strengthens parent-child bonds
  • Even a few minutes of reading daily can make a tremendous difference in your child's learning journey.

Let's work together to support our students' success!

Warmly,

Elizabeth Veal

Community Schools Update

Happy New Year!!

Welcome to 2025 - this year is starting off with a bang!  We are well on our way to completion of the application for the Community Schools Implementation grant which is due at the beginning of February.  This grant will provide money over the next 5 years to establish supports and services for our students.  The Advisory Team has been reviewing information gathered over the last year (i.e. barriers to student success, extra supports needed, professional development, school climate, etc.) to determine suggestions for the budget.  These suggestions will be compiled by the administrative team to create a budget that will be supplied with the grant application.  We are also looking at creative ways to establish additional working spaces for any increased services we are able to execute.

Upcoming Events

The Bayshore School will be hosting another Family Literacy Night on February 6 from 3:30-5:00 pm for families of students in Grades 1-3.  Families will have an opportunity to discuss what literacy looks like for their age student and activities/games that can be done at home to boost student literacy.  Childcare and Grab-and-Go meals will be provided.  Please RSVP by January 29 using the flyers linked below.  Looking forward to seeing you all  there.   [English]   [Spanish]  [Chinese]

Information for Families

If you have children aged 0 to 5 in your home, take a moment to get your kids signed up for the Imagination Library. This program is a collaboration of the San Mateo Libraries with Dolly Parton’s organization.  By signing up, each child in your home will be given a book every month until their 5th birthday.  Reading and literacy are important skills for our youth to develop and exposure to books is the first step to building their love of this crucial capability.  [English]     [Spanish]

We are always looking for parents to be a part of the Community School Advisory Team.  Meetings take place on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 3:30-4:30 pm. We changed the time based on some feedback so please consider joining the team if this new time works better for your schedule. Click on the following link for more details: [English] [Spanish] [Chinese]. In order to ensure that all voices are represented within the Community Schools Implementation Plan, please consider joining us as your opinion is vital!
