Dear Sycamore Valley Families,
I hope you and your family are well. This week started with the excitement of Caine’s Arcade - a STEM based 5th grade tradition. I am always so impressed with the ingenuity of our students and the games they create are really fun! (see pics below)
Keep reading for some dates to remember (we have an adjusted schedule on Halloween and some days off that you will want to note), information on White Cane Day, reminders to help our students start the day successfully, Read Alouds, Halloween Event Details and a District Update.

White Cane Day:
Did you know that October 15th is International White Cane Day? This year, one of our fourth grade students, Mila, shared a video and presented it to her class. She explained that the cane is a tool that allows her to safely navigate our school campus and shared ways that students can be respectful and help keep her safe (ie. don’t jump over the cane). The rest of the upper grade classes will be viewing the video over the next few weeks. We are so proud of Mila and our students as we continue to build a more inclusive Sycamore Valley community.
Blacktop Reminder:
Parents are welcome on the blacktop at arrival and at the end of the day. However, should you see some behaviors that you think need to be corrected, please speak to yard duty person and we will manage the situation. It is not acceptable to correct another person’s child directly. This is very upsetting to the children and does not set them up for a successful day. We appreciate your cooperation. Read Alouds -

Sycamore Valley Elementary 21st Annual Fun Run is coming! We are TWO WEEKS away from the FUN RUN on Thursday, November 7th! Please read on for some important updates and reminders!
Currently, we have $19K pledged to support Sycamore Valley PTA's many programs! Please consider making a donation or pledge to support your runner and Sycamore Valley PTA! If you have not yet turned in your permission slip, please do so ASAP so your student can come out and participate! Get some pledges to support the many great programs that Sycamore Valley PTA supports! Remember that the top fundraising class AND the top 30 INDIVIDUAL fundraisers (not siblings combined/families) earn an ice cream party after school!
Field/Fencing update:
As many Sycamore Families know, we have used see-through mesh fencing since returning to the fun run post COVID, a requirement given to us by the district to hold our event. We are happy to report that the fencing is no longer needed! However, it is always nice to safely mark off the area for our students participating in the fun run and parents who are there to watch and cheer on our students. Therefore, this year, while we will not be using the fencing, we will have cones and caution tape to mark off the area for the runners to safely run their laps. We kindly ask parents who are there to watch and don’t have a volunteer job to remain behind the cones so our runners can get in as many laps as possible! Thank you for your cooperation to keep everyone safe!
Please reach out to Erin and Christy at: funrun@sycamorevalleypta.org with any questions! Looking forward to seeing you on the turf field on Thursday, November 7th!

RESEARCH PROJECTS:
The Research Project for October is aligned with the upcoming “Red Ribbon Week.” Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to increase student awareness of the importance of making healthy choices. Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for schools and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention. Students can pick any topic for their research presentation that is related to the importance of making healthy choices for the human body and mind. Example research topics may include exercise, sports, healthy eating, etc.
Presentations can be a trifold and/or poster board. Trifolds for projects are available in the front office. For this research topic we will not be accepting slide show (ppt), audio or video presentations as all research presentations will be displayed at the upcoming PTA event for Red Ribbon Week on Halloween.
Presentations are due on Thursday, October 31. Students should leave their presentations on the MPR stage the morning of the 31st. We will have all presentations set up and displayed during the “Red Ribbon Week” dance party during lunch recess that day. Students should pick up their research projects from the MPR stage at the end of the day and take them home. For any questions or concerns, please contact Raj (rajiedeol@gmail.com). STEAM ART: Signups for November-May STEAM Art classes will happen tonight, October 24th, at 8:30pm.
