October 16, 2024 As your Superintendent, I believe it is important to communicate candidly in an effort to keep you informed and engaged. Through this newsletter, I will regularly share important news, challenges, and highlights as we work together to support the success of all our students.
We are ten weeks into the school year, and there are many great things happening throughout SRVUSD. During my school visits, I am so impressed with the work of our staff and the evidence of learning that I see and hear from our students. As would be the case for any large-scale organization focused on serving the needs of each student, we also have areas of growth and challenges that must be addressed. My goal is to provide you with regular communication about both aspects of our wonderful district - the things we should celebrate and the areas we can focus on for continued growth. I am hopeful you’ll find some time in your busy schedule to review this update on current events and future projections for SRVUSD.

SRVUSD Fiscal Picture and Business Services Leadership
I am very excited to share with our staff and community that Mr. Daniel Hillman was appointed last night by our Board of Education to serve as the new Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. He will begin with SRVUSD on November 1st. Mr. Hillman brings a wealth of experience from within SRVUSD, where he has served as a High School Principal, Executive Director of Facilities, and former Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations and Facilities. Mr. Hillman is returning to SRVUSD from Fremont Unified where he was serving as their Associate Superintendent of Business Services. Please join me in welcoming him back to SRVUSD. Mr. Hillman will oversee all aspects of business services, budget accounting and forecasting, facilities and parcel tax issues, and will supervise all classified and managerial employees in these departments.
Exceptional leadership will be critical for SRVUSD as we address the need to take significant budget-balancing actions in the coming year(s). More specifically, our revised fiscal projections indicate that SRVUSD will need to reach 3.5 million dollars in budget-balancing solutions for this year (2024-25) and another 24 million dollars in the next school year (2025-26). Our Budget Advisory Committee has been hard at work reviewing potential solutions. In the coming months, November through January, we will be reaching out to gather additional community and staff input and presenting action steps to our Board of Education to shape an improved trajectory for SRVUSD’s fiscal condition.
If you are interested in learning more about how our school district is funded, how tax dollars are allocated to schools in the state of California, how SRVUSD allocates funds, and some of the challenges we face from a financial perspective, you can review the recording I’ve created about school funding in California and what it means for us in SRVUSD. This is a presentation I’ve provided to a few groups in SRVUSD and our community over the last two months. Please note the entire presentation is just under an hour, so if you do decide to review this material, I suggest you make yourself comfortable first, or view it in chunks. In other Business and Facilities news, Stella Kemp, the Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations, has resigned from the District effective June 30, 2025. |

Measure Q - Election Day is Coming |
I am hopeful all members of our community will take advantage of their opportunity to vote this November, either in person or by mail-in ballot.
As you may know, SRVUSD has placed Measure Q on the ballot for this General Election in November. Measure Q, if passed by voters, would be a continuation of our existing parcel tax rate ($144 per year for each parcel). If passed by voters, Measure Q results in the continuation of a locally generated funding source of roughly $6.9 million each year for the next nine years. These funds would not be subject to state budget reductions or spending mandates, providing monetary support for teachers and additional programs in science, technology, engineering, arts, math, reading, and writing. The funds would also be available to prepare students for college and careers, maintaining technical, vocational, and career training courses.

A huge thank you to SRVEF and all the dedicated volunteers, sponsors, and participants who helped make the 2024 Run For Education a huge success. It was wonderful to see and meet so many of our students and community members at this event. Not only is it a great chance to engage with the community, but it also raises critical funds that SRVEF uses to further support programs and students throughout our District. This partnership is truly special and your support of our Run for Education creates a tremendous positive impact for our students, our schools, and our staff. Thank you for your participation, and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s run.

Academic Success - SRVUSD Named as a Top District in Bay Area
Recently, SRVUSD was identified by Niche as a top district in the Bay Area (#2 in Contra Costa County) and top 30 in the state of California. This recognition is due to our high levels of academic success, outstanding staff, and extracurricular programs. As you know, those positive rankings are also a result of our successful partnership with you as parents and caregivers. We are always better off when working together. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Recent test score results released from the state showed that SRVUSD is far outperforming other school districts in the state and the Bay Area. These same test results also demonstrate that we have important work to do in addressing the academic needs of our students, as we continue to focus on implementing measures to increase scores for English Language Arts and Math. While our scores are above county and state averages, we want to remain focused on maximizing the academic growth and social development of each student, as we know those steps will create further positive outcomes related to state-level test scores.
Recently, our comprehensive high schools were recognized by the AP Board as Honor Roll Schools based on AP scores, as follows: Dougherty Valley High School - Platinum California High School - Gold
Monte Vista High School - Gold San Ramon Valley High School - Silver |
