Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Student safety is always of paramount priority. We will continue to provide you with updates related to the current excessive heat warnings.
The District website has a Heat Advisory page where you can find resources and information from Contra Costa County and the State of California. We will add new resources to this webpage as we receive them. You can also find information about instances of extreme air quality issues on our Air Quality web page. We monitor and follow all guidance provided by the county and the state, including the CA Department of Public Health (CDPH) Interim Health Guidance.
Schools Will Remain Open
During days of excessive heat, SRVUSD schools remain open and operating according to posted bell schedules. We will continue to focus on keeping kids hydrated, making sure they stay out of the sun as much as possible and limiting outdoor activity during the hottest hours of the day.
Absences Due to Heat
Hot weather is not a qualifying reason for excused absences. Staff employ strategies to ensure our students have access to shade, indoor spaces, and water. If your student has a medical condition exacerbated by the heat and needs to remain at home, please notify attendance staff according to your school’s absence reporting protocols.
Power Outages
When a power outage occurs at one of our schools, our District and administrative teams maintain close contact with PG&E and provide updates and information to the affected school community by email and text. School will not be canceled when the power is out. Our staff will continue class instruction while keeping our students safe. During this time of high temperatures, doors and windows will stay closed to maintain the cool air inside as long as possible. We are grateful for our partnerships with the local utilities and public service providers who work with us to ensure our schools stay safe for all.
High School Athletics
To ensure the safety of our student-athletes and coaching staff, High School Principals, Athletic Directors, and Coaches will follow the Contra Costa County Health (CCHS) Hot Weather Guidelines for Athletic Practice and will implement the guidelines listed by the health department when practicing or participating in competition. If your student-athlete has a medical condition exacerbated by the heat and needs to remain at home, please notify your child’s coach.
