Board Member Corner

Trustee Susanna Ordway had a wonderful time working with students in the classroom when she was invited to lead an art project to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Thanks to Mrs. Golde, 4th grade teacher at Hidden Hills Elementary, Trustee Ordway was able to share and teach students about some Chinese New Year traditions, including kumquats and their meaning for the New Year celebrations. Everyone in the class had the opportunity to try a fresh kumquat!

Trustee Ordway also attended the Lunar New Year celebration at Quail Run Elementary where she was entertained by student performances of song and dance. Students, families, and guests appreciated the acrobatic performance which included Chinese dragons in Quail Run’s courtyard while enjoying dinner and treats. This special event was hosted by the school’s Mandarin program.

School Highlight: Deep Learning and Innovation in Action

It’s always a tribute to deep learning when students are passionate about their educational experiences and are willing to share their ideas with others! Monte Vista students Maya, Krisha and Neil, who are members of the League of Innovative Schools, used an Advisory period to present their research on education reform to their peers. They discussed class offerings that encourage student engagement and future career paths, and the factors that contribute to student course selection. The three students also offered data on the pressures connected to taking too many AP classes, the student-perceived need to boost their GPA, the option to take more ‘life skills’ classes or career development classes before graduation, and the desire to have open conversations about difficult topics. Maya, Krisha, and Neil also led a lively peer discussion inviting ideas, solutions, and questions. We applaud their efforts to raise student voice in the ongoing conversation of improving the experience of deep learning and innovation in SRVUSD!

Steering for Success: Shared Leadership in SRVUSD

At its February meeting, the Social Emotional Well-Being Steering Committee listened to a presentation regarding student absenteeism by Sasha Lubkin, Teacher on Special Assignment, who has been working with site attendance teams and administrators to support students and families who are absent.  She discussed possible factors that can contribute to student absences and how absenteeism is tied to social emotional well-being. The group discussed current and potential ways of maintaining and creating positive school climates and the ability to offer support for all students. At the upcoming April meeting, the committee will discuss and offer recommendations to further advance this work.

We Love Our Volunteers!

Volunteers are the heart and soul of our school communities and allow us to offer so much more to our students. Bella Vista’s PTA president, La Vonda, brings her passion to the PTA and Bella Vista by implementing programs with an eye on community service and fun. Principal Ryan Maloney shared, “We are so lucky to have La Vonda leading the Bella Vista PTA. She always goes the extra mile!”

Vista Grande volunteer, Todd, makes a huge impact on the VG community. He generously gives his time as a Lunch Duty volunteer, a Site Council member, and contributor to the school safety plan. As a retired Oakland police officer, his knowledge, time, and skills are especially appreciated!
